NESFAS’s initiative to positively impact its local community carries on with the 3rd delivery of the harvest from its community garden to the underprivileged families of Laitumkhrah. The operation began with the planting of the community garden at the NESFAS Headquarters following the resolution that the organization would work towards making a model community out of Laitumkhrah.

So in its first few baby-steps, the NESFAS team harvested an assortment of vegetables – yam leaves, beet root leaves, purple beans and cucumber, all grown organically, and then distributed them among the families, identified after a survey of the locality for families falling below the poverty line.

The sharing of the community harvests have taken place on three occasions so far; the latest being on the 30th July 2014 at Punjabi Line, Lum Sohra. Beneficiaries of this small intervention, consist of four families headed by Mangal Singh, Geeta Kaur, Savarini Kaur and Samriti Kaur.

This was preceded by the initial visit that took place on June 27 where NESFAS Chairman, Bah Phrang Roy, along with the NESFAS staff first met the beneficiary families. The second batch of the, vegetables was shared with these families on 4th July.

The plants harvested from the NESFAS community garden were planted on 29th April 2014 by the NESFAS team. Vegetables planted include red potato, turmeric, Manipuri bean, purple bean, coriander, carrot, maize, beet root, yam, cucumber, pumpkin and onion.
