A delegation from the Northeast at the ongoing Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre 2014 in Turin, Italy. The Slow Food Movement or the International Terra Madre (Terra Madre is Italian for Mother Earth) is a movement with individuals and groups from across the world gathering at Turin to learn from each other and share their anxieties at the destructive nature of the extensive use of pesticides, chemical fertilisers. Meghalaya agriculture director Dorothy Syiemiong made a presentation on contributing 100 species of food crops from Meghalaya alone to the Ark of Taste at the Terra Madre, which showcases those food products that are a threatened species. The Ark of Taste is a sort of storehouse for indigenous food crops from all countries and regions. Syiemiong mentioned a particular wild ginger with medicinal properties (syingkhong). She also spoke about Mawlynnong, dubbed as the cleanest village in Meghalaya, and about Sohra and Mawsynram.
