Linking Schools to Agrobiodiversity: NESFAS’ latest initiative to oust Malnutrition through school meals kicks off at 5 schools
The official launch of the six-month-long, “Linking Schools to Agrobiodiversity for Improved diets, Nutrition, and Livelihoods” initiative by NESFAS was held at Ladmawphlang Community Hall on the 20th of May 2022. Mulum Community Seed Bank leads the way in preserving and disseminating Indigenous seeds
Before the intervention of SURE and NESFAS, farmers of the Mulum community in West Jaintia Hills preserved their seeds in the traditional method that had been practised since the olden days – the seeds were either kept hanging above the fireplace or wrapped in a cloth and kept near the fireplace. Community Seed Fair for strengthening Indigenous Food Systems
A Community Seed Fair exchange visit along with an Agrobiodiversity Walk was held at Sohmynting, West Jaintia Hills on the 16th of April 2022. Organised by NESFAS in partnership with Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment (SURE), and funded by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), the event saw the participation of 20 project partner villages along with non-project villages from Demthring, Lumkhudung, Plongingkhaw (Jaintia Hills District). Bah Grossful Pariong and his 20 ducks: A story of an unconventional way of pest management
Ever since mankind started practicing agriculture, many animals have been used to assist farmers in tilling, sowing, and harvesting crops from the farm. However, in the small village of Mawkamoit Dongpdeng in West Khasi Hills, a custodian farmer is becoming the talk of the village for using his team of 20 ducks to act as pest sentries in his farm.
